Workshops with Dr. JoAnn Moody

On December 13-14, 2007, Dr. JoAnn Moody, a national diversity consultant who works with colleges, universities and professional schools, offered a series of workshops focusing on the needs of different groups throughout Rensselaer’s faculty and staff. [Agenda]

Rensselaer Deans and Department Chairs attended a morning retreat and workshop on recruitment and retention employing  a series of case studies to help institute leaders comprehend the issues surrounding appointments and advancement.  The workshop proved to be a highly effective method for conveying and understanding faculty concerns, and was instrumental in moving the academy forward. 

Luncheon for Mentees

Women faculty and this year's Career Campaign Award winners met Dr. Moody at an on-campus luncheon to discuss mentoring and career advancement. This came on the heels of RAMP-Up’s announcement of the “2008 Call for Career Campaign” proposals.  [Career Campaign]

 

Durland Consulting: Evaluation Interviews

From December 10-13 , 2007, Durland Consulting visited the Rensselaer campus to conduct data analyses and extensive interviews as part of RAMP-Up's formal external evaluation of the first year of our program.  

Cultural Change Initiative

The importance of building social networks and community within departments can be a huge factor in building a more productive climate for faculty and an improved campus culture. As part of the Year-Two initiatives, research on Cultural Change within select departments created a starting point for improving connections and developing a greater sense of community within departments participating in the initiative. In October 2007, the RAMP-UP advisory board, under the direction of Professors Cheryl Geisler and Debbie Kaminski, announced four recipients of $10,000 Departmental Cultural Change grants. The awards promote changes to build a more responsive social network within individual departments in the science and engineering disciplines. The first four departments were awarded Departmental Cultural Change Awards: Biology, Biological and Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Physics. [See story]

Women's Faculty Retreat and Workshop

In the fall of 2007, RAMP-Up's Kick-Off event brought faculty together to emphasize the importance of social networks and provided an in-depth review of the literature on career advancement. Events were held at a historical site serving working women as a respite from factory conditions associated with the many textile and manufacturing businesses located in Troy from the early 1900's. Building Awareness: Colloquy Coverage

In March of 2007, RAMP-Up initiated a series of events to jump start campus awareness of the NSF Advance Institutional Transformation Initiative. Many articles appeared both online and in print journals locally and nationally:

Fall 2007 Women Retreat retreat

A fall kick-off retreat designed to encourage women to recognize advancement and negotiation opportunities was held as   part of a series of workshops from September 29-30, 2007.   A Sunday morning workshop on social networking helped faculty recognize the value of building departmental relationships as part of an overall career plan.
